Proverbs 1
Proverbs 1
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
We are to know wisdom and instruction.
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
We are to RECEIVE the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity.
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
We are to give humbly to the simple.
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
If we are wise we will hear and increase the learning. We are to find WISE counselors. Biblical couselors.
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
We must find wise counself to understand a proverb and the interpretation.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The beginning of knowledge is to have a fear of the Lord. A fool will despise wisdom and instruction.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
We are to hear the instruction of our father, and we are not to forsake the rules our parents make.
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
We are not to give in to sinners.
11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
We are not to walk with the people mentioned above. ^^ We are to stay clear of their path.
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Psalm 1
Okay, I'm just going to do Psalm 1 today. Because I heard a message on it a while ago. I actually think I posted about it...But I'm not sure. Anyway...
Psalm 1-
1-Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2-But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3-And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4-The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which in the wind driveth away.
5-Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6-For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
In verse 1 it talks about the blessed man or Christian not walking in the counsel of the ungodly, standing in the way of sinners, or sitting with the scornful. [What a Christian should NOT do.] If you look at it, it is a downward progression. First you are walking, then standing still, then sitting with sinners. And each step leads farther another way to.
The first with walking. You should not seek counsel from the ungodly. You should seek counsel from others that are Christians and that will search the Scriptures with you to find an answer. The second with standing. Standing in the way of sinners. Really, associating ourselves with sinners. We should not always be hanging out with ungodly people. Of course we can be friends with them, but don't spend all your time with them, because they will pull you down spiritually.
The third with sitting. Sitting with the scornful. Scorning someone is making fun of or mocking someone. So if you get to the sitting stage, you are making fun/mocking Christians and/or Christ.
But in verse 2 is what the Christian is SUPPOSED to be doing. He should be delighting in the Word of God. And meditating on it day and night. Otherwise, it should always be at the forefront of our thoughts.
The reward is found in verse 3. If you delight and meditate on the Word of God the reward is being like a tree that brings fruit and never withers, always prospering.
Verse 4 it explains the penalty of the sinner is that he is like chaff and fades away. And that we should not associate with each other in verse 5.
Verse 6 is a reminder that God knows the way of everyone and that the ungodly will perish.

Up Devotions
Because I didn't get it done yesterday, I figured I'd post about it today, so I wouldn't get behind.
Last week in "Up" it focused on being honest with God.
Sunday-- It talked about how God sees everything. Yea, we know that, but do we REALLY think of life that way? It talked about how we want God to see us when we are doing good things. But when we are sinning we ignore the fact that He is STILL watching us.
Monday--It talked about how honesty is the INNER workings of a person. When explaining honesty, words such as integrity, honor, and sincerity come up. It talked about how we sin, every day. Another thing that stuck out at me was how God sees everything, so when you confess your sin, it's not like He's going to be surprised that you did something wrong. One more thing was how once you figure out why you are trying to hide things from God, you can take it before Him in prayer. Reasons I wrote down for not wanting to take certain things to Him were fear, shame, fleshliness, and sin.
Tuesday-- It talked circus elephants and how they train them. And how Satan would like to se us helpless and unable to overcome our past sins. God wants to set us free, but we need to stop trying to get free on our own.
Wednesday-- It talked about how God is Omniscient [all-knowing], Ominpresent [present at all times in all places], and Omnipotent [all-powerful]. It talked a little more on how God can not be shocked by your sins because He already knows them. And how its different if you are going to your mom and confessing something she didn't know. She could be shocked that you would do such a thing, but God is 'unshockable'.
Thursday-- It talked about stress/worry/anxiety. Which I found quite coinicidental because I am going through a lot of worry lately. It said how since Adam and Eve sinned, we have had stress, and trials. Something that helped me a little was realizing that because God is all those things from the day before, [omni-scient/present/potent] He alreayd knows about all those things in your life that stress and worry you. Philippians 4:6 says "Be careful for nothing." In the translation that the book uses it says, "Be anxious about nothing." Verse 7 from the translation in the book says, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Peace, that is what I've been looking for. It talked about how stress IS real, we just need to learn how to deal with it Biblically and with the help of God.
Friday-- It talked about hiding things. We had things because of fear. What I really liked was that, because God knows everything, when we hide something, it hurts Him. He already knows what you have done wrong, you can't hide anything from Him. But when you try to hide things from God, it saddens Him.
Saturday-- It talked about how to start being honest with God with a special exercise. You are to put on a pair of glasses, and act like you are God, going through your room. You're to 'discuss' things with God and find things that you are hiding from Him. Compile a list and then take each one of those things to Him.
Learning about honesty was hard, because it's an area I don't want to learn about. But I NEED it. It was hard to read some of the stuff because I knew I was failing in certain areas. But I hope and pray that the Lord would help me in these areas. And I know He will, it's just the effort that I put into it.

Monday--I will read a chapter or two of Psalms and post my thoughts on it.
Tuesday--Will continue to be Reader's Pick.
Wednesday--Weekly reading/thoughts of Philippians
Thursday--I will read Proverbs and post what I learned from it.
Friday--I will post a little something from the book called, "Gaining Favor with God and man".
Saturday--I will post on what the week was about in the devotion book I'm doing called 'Up'.

Just an update
Sorry guys, it's been a few days...I've been really busy with work and trying to do school and trying to figure things out...
I'll just give an update and then later I'll post something I've been learning...
Wednesday I had a sore throat, so I didn't go to work. And then I worked Thursday and Friday. Yesterday was a long kind of day. I had cramps and my foot hurt REALLY bad because of the way I sit...[sidenote--Heather, you are at least not starting these problems until you're older...try starting them when your 16!!] But I went to Phil's computer shop so I could get Photoshop on my computer for school. And Jesse played a game on the computers. Then we went to Rebekah's house for Isaac's birthday party! [We were there early...]
The party was fun. All the guys, and myself, played football like games...I ACTUALLY caught the ball!!! ANDDDD it was DARK OUTSIDE!!! I was like so shocked I caught the ball that I almost forgot what I needed to do. And no one knew I had the ball, so I ran towards the goal...Only, I didn't know how far it really was until the goal, so I ended up stopping, like 2 feet away from where the goal was, but then we got a point anyway...It was so awesome!
Well, now that's all over, and its Sunday morning. I have done my devotions, and gotten ready for Church. Now I need to eat breakfast, brush my teeth and I'm ready to go. I'll hopefully post something else a little later...
Have a great day everyone!!

It's been a few days...
I thought maybe now I should update. I have come to a decision about something.
I stopped reading my Bible on day 3. I didn't have time/just didn't make the time. So I will not be doing the Bible in 90 days challenge anymore. But I will continue to read through the Bible, just not in 90 days. I encourage those who are doing it to keep on track and keep going! I'm praying for those who are doing the challenge. Remember that you can do it but only with the Lord's help.
Work has been fun. Everyone there is nice and we just have a good time. Today I have to work from 11-5. I plan on posting later if I get time or make time.
But I just thought I'd update you all on how my life has been.

Bible in 90 days
Anyone who is doing the Bible in 90 days challenge, I hope you looked at the schedule yesterday, because I didn't get to post...But here's the passages updated...
January 2nd--Genesis 17:1 to Genesis 28:19
January 3rd--Genesis 28:20 to Genesis 40:11
I just thought I'd add. If you are going by the schedule, you are actually getting the readings done in 88 days. But because we fail, there are two 'grace days' to use if you get behind. But it's good to keep on track!
Good luck!

New Year
Well, happy new year everyone!! I have my resolutions for the year, a.k.a. goals. You can see them when you scroll down on the right hand side. I just finished my devotions for the day. I decided to do the devotional book that my mom got me for the year instead of the other one. And then I read my Bible in 90 days challenge. It took me a little over an hour and I stayed decently focused. I was surprised. In the devotional book I did it has a hymn and then a little bit about the hymn and a verse. Today was really good. It talked about how at the beginning of a new year we can be thankful that we have another whole year to be with God, whether we live the whole year or die, we will still be with God. It was just really good. The hymn talked about another year being a servant for God and the way it was laid out was soo great!
Well, I am sorry that this is late...But I was traveling and doing my devotions when I got home.
Today's Bible reading is Genesis 1:1-Genesis16:16 if you are doing the Bible challenge.
I'll do better tomorrow now that I'm home!
~Emily
P.S. --I will post the Reader's Pick tomorrow because of lack of time. And I will put up the new poll as well.

Sorry/Happy
Hi everyone,
Sorry that I haven't posted in a few days. Saturday I went and took my driver's test...I passed!! After the test we went to my aunt and uncle's to visit and after 2 and a half long hours there my brother and I got dropped off at Shaffer's for the teen thing. Not many showed up and then we spent the night. Church was good this morning and the small play went well. Now we have this evening's part because it's the Christmast service. The pastor and his wife are leaving tomorrow to go visit people.
The sad thing is I still don't feel in the Christmas mood at all! Christmas is TUESDAY! And I'm just not ready for it. It was the same way last year because there isn't much snow...In any sense, that's not what it's all about. I'm almost done reading Luke becuase tomorrow is the last chapter! It's been a great book to read. Well, I may post later...

Thoughts
Hi everyone...
I have been thinking a LOT lately about how I know LOTS of Scripture and principles...But do I really truly apply them????? I've been working on applying them. Sometimes I just feel that I'm two-faced. And the Scripture says a that we should not be that way. I often feel as though I tell myself one thing and do the other. It's a constant battle. And it's getting harder and harder for me as I find new trials that the Lord puts me in.
But He will give me strength to get through them. I love the verse that talks about the Lord not giving us more than we can handle...If you know that verse please give me the reference...It's a GREAT reminder that we CAN do things, as long as we have surrendered all to God. One thing that always gets me is His death on the cross. He DIED for me. He SUFFERED for me. I owe Him EVERYTHING in my life...Not just a few things here and there, but EVERYTHING! By Him only am I able to get to Heaven and it was a great sacrifice on His part for a stuggling, unworthy girl like me. We are all unworthy because of our sin, but because He paid the price that we could not pay, we can be forgiven and saved. It's challenging when I think I can do this or that, even though I KNOW it doesn't please the Lord. Then I realize, it's only by Him that I am here and I need to do what DOES please Him.

Doubting God
Last night I didn't get to bed late cause it was so hot in my room and I couldn't get comfortable. I got to sleep a little after 11 o'clock thinking, "I'm NEVER going to get up at 5am!" I was just so upset...
Little did I know when I woke up and looked at my clock it was 5:06. 5 o'clock. I got up. And I was refreshed, and ready to start my day. [For the most part.]
Later as I was doing some school and thinking about other stuff, I realized...Saying that I could NOT get up was doubting that God would not give me the strength to get up. I pray every night that He would help me to get up every morning ready to serve Him. And I had... At that moment of realizing that I had doubted God, I prayed to Him and asked forgiveness.
How often do we pray about something, and often we have little or no faith that God will actually do it. Rick taught in Sunday School about it...
James 1:5-6 says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."
Matthew 21:22 says, "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive."
What a great reminder that we need to have true faith when we ask God for help and to know that He CAN help us. I feel that God was teaching me a little lesson this morning...And my day went great too. I was happier, and felt refreshed all day. It's amazing what we often don't think about things like that when we need to.
And of course, following our answered pray of receiving help, we need to praise and thank God for the power to get through things.

New Year
Hi everyone,
I just figured I'd give you all a little peek into what I'm planning in my devotional life for the new year.
I'm starting off January 1st with reading the Bible in 90 days. [See link on right -way down there-] That will last until March 30th. I am inviting whoever wants to to join with me. I will be posting what you need to read, or you can print the schedule. So far Molly is joining with me. I will be keeping tabs if you want to join me, meaning e-mails or another form of finding out if you're reading it...Then I will post everyone's name that completed it on March 31st, along with a certificate that you can print out and sign.
That's 1/4 of the year already. I MAY do another devotional book at that time, but I'm not sure. I will of course be reading those 'inspiring' type books. Just not a daily devotional unless I find I can handle it.

I just remembered...ALL of the year I'll be doing a short devotional every day out of a book called "God & I Time Treasures Volume 2". It gives you Scripture to read every day and then a small space to record what you learn.

Then starting March 31st, Molly and I are doing a devotional book together called "Beyond the Sun" and that is going to last 7 weeks. During that time I MAY do a different devotional as well, but like I said, I don't want to overwhelm myself and then quit.

Following that I am going to do a deep devotion time with the book "Seeking Him" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. It is 12 weeks long. I listened to some of the recordings that go along with it and I think it will be VERY good for me. I MAY try and do it during the 90 days through the Bible, but like I said, I don't want to overwhelm myself...

Following that I am going to do another 12 week study in a book called "Up".
So far that is all I have, along with all of the books I would LIKE to read in my reading list.
Well, that's all for today,
~Em
P.S. --I will also be working on my binder more next year. I'll be posting about my binder tomorrow...

Your Pick
Hey everyone,
The votes are in but I'm doing things a little different than what you all voted for. It was brought to my attention, that with the new year coming up it would be kinda neat to do the 'more on my binder' because it could be a way you could maybe start a binder or go along with me...So I've decided to do that...
Now, what I have decided is to post about that Tuesday so I have time to take pictures and things. Now, what I'll do is put up another vote for what you want me to post and it will be open for 7 days. Then every 7th day I'll post on what you guys picked...It's gonna be called "Pick it Tuesdays". I'm going to start one now and then have it end the last day of December/this year and then January 1st I will post what you picked...Since next Tuesday is Christmas...
What I would like to do is have something similar every day of the week, like a weekly thing...Like Monday's one subject, Tuesdays do the "Pick It", and so on. So if you have any ideas for me please post here...

Praying
I want to apologize one last time. I'm sorry that I haven't been getting great things out. BUT, I finally got something to post and time to post. So I'm going to post it...Haha
It's on prayer. Praying is a vital part in a Christian life. God can do great things when we pray. But there are a few things I've been learning about prayer lately and I thought I'd share them with you. I have been cautious when I tell someone that I'll pray for them. I read an article in "Today's Christian Woman" about praying for one another. Of course it's GREAT to pray for other people. But don't say you'll pray for them unless you can commit to truly praying for them. I have started a prayer journal that I write all my prayer requests in. I have my committed prayers and ones I thought of that I need to pray for when I think about them.
We often feel so sorry for another person that it's just a 'second-nature' to say, I'll pray for you. It does help, but only if you REALLY are going to commit to praying for them. I have recently started commiting in my prayer time. I have a few friends who are going through a rough time in their life and have told them I would pray for them. Even if they think it's just going to be a 'when ever she remembers' thing, their wrong. If I have commited to praying for someone I truly do now. I used to always say "I'll pray for you", but did I really pray for them? No. Only occasionally would I remember and actually pray for them. I'm doing MUCH better now. And have read that article it really opened my eyes to what my prayer life should really consist of.
I hope you have been encouraged and will change your ways of praying if need be.
